Studio in Warsaw

Iwan Kulik

Iwan Kulik was born in 1959 in the village of Lyashchivka in the Cherkasy region of Ukraine. He drew from childhood. He studied at the art faculty in Dnipropetrovsk, then at the Kharkiv Institute of Applied Arts, where he read monumental painting and interior architecture.

In 1990 he moved to Poland and settled in Warsaw. His first solo exhibition took place in 1991 in the building of the Polish Sejm. Warsaw, Łódź, Sopot and Vienna followed.

He works in oil on canvas, painting in thematic cycles drawn from world literature — Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, Cervantes' Don Quixote, Orwell's Animal Farm. The figure of Stańczyk, the Polish court jester, holds a place of its own.

In 2001 the Italian winery Cormons commissioned a label for its Vino della Pace. In 2006 his portrait of Pontius Pilate illustrated a scientific paper in the medical journal The Lancet.

Kulik's works are held in private collections around the world.
