Stańczyk

The court jester of the Polish kings was the only man permitted to tell the truth to a king's face. Matejko painted him sitting alone while the court dances.
In my cycle Stańczyk appears in different eras and different clothes, but always with the same expression — that of a man who knows more than those around him and says nothing.
The figure entered my work shortly after I moved to Poland and has stayed ever since.
